Living in Canada has many benefits. When the place warms up we can entertain the idea of a garden in your yard. Spring is a great time to start the preparation of garden beds which would then bring forth delicious cucumbers, tomatoes, strawberries , cilantro and a wide variety of squash
Unfortunately for us squirrels live for eating from our gardens, strawberries being a treat for them.   Squirrels are not nocturnal, which means they search for food during the day .Here is some information on what you might want to pay extra attention to.

WHAT DO SQUIRRELS EAT?

Most squirrels are vegetarians.  Their diet relies mostly on fruits, nuts and vegetables. Favoring fruits such as apples, oranges, tomatoes, and avocados.  Squirrels sometimes dabble in the cuisine of eating some insects, so you can say they eat meat too. But over all a squirrel will eat anything that is available.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR PLANTS FROM SQUIRRELS

Here are some ways to keep squirrels out of your garden to protect your fruits, vegetables, and nuts . These tips  will help keep animals, such as rabbits, squirrels, and deer, at bay.

COVER PLANTS WITH MESH OR NETTING

If your garden is not enclosed with a material like chicken wire, this stands as an open invitation for the creatures to feast on your plants and flowers. If you build an enclosure around your plants that does not agree with your budget, you can always go with using mess and steaks around the area. A reel of chicken wire would cost anywhere from $13 CAD to $27 CAD  and can be found in places as your local Home Depot. This will help keep squirrels and other rodents from eating your plants.

BUILDING ENCLOSED CONTAINERS

Squirrels will try to get through anything, so if you want to protect your garden completely, engaging the plants would be a great option to work with. All you will need to ensure  is that all sides of the gardens are surrounded.
You also need to keep in mind that squirrels dig under cages etc. You will need to keep this in mind if you intend to plant on a raised bed with wooden planks they may not be able to get underground. But once you are making above ground fixtures, a fully enclosed area can be builts with materials like wood, PVC pipe, chicken wire, etc.  You can find some ideas on Pinterest or order items that I shared above.

ADD PLANTS THAT SQUIRRELS DO NOT LIKE

Squirrels tend to dislike the smell of some of the flowers, dislike them so much that once they are planted around the area you need to protect, they will not interfere with what’s within the barrier. You can plant flowers such as; marigolds, daffodils, geraniums, hyacinth, or lily-of-the-valley. Or you can try plants such as  peppermint, garlic, onion, or pepper.

USE SQUIRREL REPELLENTS OR DETERRENTS

There are several different types of rodent repellent or deterrents made to secure your new plants and vegetables. There are items for sale that include red fox urine for example. Trying home remedies such as sprinkling cayenne pepper around the area is known to work but only stays effective for a day or two.  Below is a list of repellents and deterrents you can consider.
Your local Home Depot or Lowes  will have these items stocked and ready for you. These items are not only attached to squirrels as most of them will work effectively against other rodents. You can also consider using a prey statue to scare them off, like an owl for instance.

DO NOT ATTRACT THEM TO YOUR YARD

Squirrels will make homes on your premises and stay forever if they find that they can access food easily. We advise that you bring out your garbage in a timely manner to meet the garbage collectors. You can consider keeping bird feeders, cat, or dog food out of your yard. This will assist you.
